The Gower Meet, May 28th – 31st Bank Holiday

The Gower Peninsula in South Wales has lovely beaches, superb cliff-walks, rough inland moorland, pubs, lots for all the family….

…. And masses of excellent climbing: it certainly has the greatest number of lower-grade routes of any of the coastal areas. There’s loads from Mod and Diff upwards, so it’s the ideal place to improve your leading skills, or to experience the delights of seacliff climbing for the first time…

…. Plus The Force will be with us …. the moon will be full, which means low low tides in the middle of the day, and the best conditions to climb from the beach.

But the area is very popular with other holidaymakers: the best campsite which can fit us all in is Oxwich Camping Park, 01792 390777, Mob 07999 567143. The site is very friendly, and has normal facilities plus a laundry and also an outdoor pool for our warm-blooded members! It is a short walk from a huge beach. £8 pppn for an ordinary tent. Campervans are OK, caravans not.

The site recommends that we book in the next 3 - 4 weeks, so think about it, and get your name to me by April 21st. Unfortunately, it might be that they fill up completely before the end of May: one other local site is already almost fully-booked.

Andy and Penny Hemsted will be there from Friday 28th – Monday 31st. Any queries to us, 0121 382 6168.

Hi All

Just a reminder of the most important meet of the year, it’s the ‘Johnny Holland Loves the Wye Valley’ Official Meet

Date: Friday 11th September.

Location: Beeches Farm Campsite above Tintern Abbey.
It’s a climbing meet on the card but everybody is invited. As you can see from the map it’s a great location for walking as we are next to the Offa’s Dyke Path. Plus there is the Abbey and the castle in Chepstow.

It’s right above Shorn Cliff, but also handy for Wintours Leap and Symond’s Yat.

So if you fancy it see below.

Best way to find the place is to follow the signs from Chepstow for the Off Road Driving Centre which is on Miss Graces Lane. (brown signs).

From the A48 (green road) on the map follow the blue arrows through Boughspring to the B4228 (orange road). Turn right and go up to the fork and turn left into Miss Grace Lane.

The campsite is at the end of Miss Grace Lane. Go straight up MGL you eventually reach Beeches farm and the camping area is then sign-posted clearly. The road is un-metalled but passable.

The campsite facilities are a field with water and cold water bathroom blocks as described in the guidebook. Shower at back of farmhouse.

Camping is £2.50 per person per night.
Fires allowed where they have been laid before. (Be careful John)
Please do not wake the house up Friday night to pay, there is an honesty book.

Miss Graces Lane
Tidenham Chase
Chepstow
Gwent
NP16 7LZ
01291 689 257
Collect firewood from the wood at the bottom of the site on your way back from the pub.

Hope to see you all there.

Hi ALL Climbers / Club Members

The venue for the Pembroke meet has been changed as the usual site (Windmill Hill) will not take bookings. Rob and myself have decided that its a long way to go on a chance so we have moved venue to the St Petrox campsite (as details below).

I have booked a couple of extra days so i will be going down on the Thursday night.

Rob has contacted the site so we just need to turn up.

For anybody who has not been there before Pembroke has some great climbing and also excellent walking and cycling, so all menbers are welcome.

Call Rob or me if you need more details.

Directions and contact details as below.

http://www.ukclimbing.com/listings/info.php?id=12&t=stay

St Petrox campsite
Address
The Old Rectory, St. Petrox, PEMBROKESHIRE SA71 5EQ
Grid Ref
SR 970975 (Landranger map 158)
Tel/Fax
01646 683 980
Costs
£7 per tent
Opening times
Just pitch your tent then find owner (or he'll find you in the morning)
Notes
Shower, tide tables, hot water, fridge, milk, bread and eggs. Children welcome. Tended BBQs are ok.
Situated away from pubs, so make your own entertainment (unless you have friends with cars..). The campsite is nice and quiet for this reason however.
An excellent site with a friendly owner. Just don't try bunking off without paying. Very good food to be found at the pub in Stackpole and The Speculation Inn hosts weekend traditional Irish music - take an instrument if you like.
Within 3 or 4 miles of Bosherston.
Directions
From Pembroke (not the docks) head towards Bosherton on the B4319. The campsite is 3 miles from Pembroke, behind the grounds of a church with a tall tower - when you pass the church on the R, you come to a bend. Turn R into Yerbeston Lane and then turn R through gate for back entrance (recommended entrance/exit).
Can be hard to spot at night! But the church is a big, looming clue, usually lit up at least slightly.
Lat: 51:38:25N (51.6402)
Lon: 4:56:02W (-4.9338)
Nearby pubs
St Govans Inn always accommodating, though not within walking distance

Cheers

Hi All

I have been chatting with several people over the last few months regarding showing them how to set up a belay.

Rather than doing this individually i plan (if anybody is interested) to do a one day course for complete beginners. Time/date and location TBA at the moment but it will hopefully be pretty soon so you get change to put it into practice this summer.

Topics would include:
Different belay set-ups
Knots
Placing wires / friends etc
Other topics as required

This is not intended to replace a real climbing course, Plas Y Brenin is the place if thats what you want. This will be just a quick intro that you can then build on yourself's.

Anybody interested let me know ASAP and i can sort the details.

Cheers

Many of the club climbers are away in Spain but here are the details for those who are still around.
Dave will be travelling all the way from Scotland to talk about risks and motivation involved in climbing and will be taking place on Wednesday 29th April 2009 in the Avon Room on the University of Birmingham Campus.

We are really excited and proud to be hosting a lecture such as this and would love to invite yourself and those from the midlands climbing community to enjoy it with us too!

There is lots of information on our website www.ubmc.co.uk including directions and an option to buy a ticket online.

2009 BMC membership card (no replies)

Hi John,
At the AGM Dawn Vale asked me why her son had not had his BMC membership card for 2009.
After conducting a quick survey of climbers at the AGM it would seem that none had yet received a 2009 BMC membership card.
I contacted the BMC about this and they told me that membership cards would be issued with the Summit magazine on the 24th March 2009.
The problem with this is that Paul Vale has not been allowed to use his University climbing wall without proof that he has BMC insurance cover.
There may be other climbers also affected as well as those that just want to claim a 10% discount from climbing shops.
I complained to the BMC about this and to cover this for next year they have agreed to extend the membership card expiry date to 31st March 2010.
I thought that it would be useful if this information could be put on the Cave and Crag website so that the climbers would know what was happening about this matter.
