Hi guys,

This is one of the Emmas from the novice caving trip to South Wales (not the one that fell down the crevasse). Matt and I were hoping to come along to the Bristol meet on 18th/19th Sept and were wondering if it's possible? Would there be any chance of us borrowing helmets and lamps?
I'm not sure if the other Emma is coming yet but I'm hoping she will.

See you guys soon hopefully! :)

Hi Everybody

Thanks to Andy and Penny for a great Gritstone Challenge. The winners glory goes to Graham and Chris (bandits - next year they are playing off HVS).

Just a quick update for the next few weeks.
A good chance to get in a long training route for Italy.
We can escape to the hut if the weather comes down.

Sat 3rd July we are climbing at Wildcat - Disco Dave's meet - see you on the crag at around 10.00 AM.

Hi

For those thinking of coming into Club night after the committee meeting, the meeting will be held at the Bull, instead of the Lamp Tavern. This is because it is more popular with those who regularly climb on a Wednesday night.

Directions to get to The Bull:

The address is: 1, Price Street, Birmingham, B4 6JU

CAR: If arriving by car on the A38 (the Aston Expressway), leave the fly-over section and descend to approach the Lancaster Circus traffic island (with its Fire Station doors visible on the eastern perimeter). leave the Island on the A34, dual-carriage-way; New Town Row, sign-posted to Walsall and West Bromwich. In about 200 yards (1/8th mile), after Vesey Street, take second left into Price Street and proceed (in this one-way street) up towards its junction with Loveday Street. Pay-and-Display parking tickets are only required between 0800 and 1800; except on Sundays.

See you there.

Best wishes

We are returning to our traditional route for our Midsummer Climbing Challenge, starting at Stanage High Neb, and finishing at Curbar and Stocking Farm, Calver.

I have booked in at the campsite for ten tents: please let me know asap if you are hoping to come, as the campsites get very busy in the summer.

We will meet on Friday 19th June either at the campsite or in the nearby pub. On Saturday 20th we will try to leave the camp at 6.45am so that slower climbers are not caught out without food at the pub! Climbs can be at Stanage (3 routes), Burbage North, Burbage South, Higgar Tor, Millstone Edge, Lawrencefield, Yarncliffe, Froggatt and Curbar.

Try to make your own pairs; ask me if you wish to take the challenge, but can't find anyone to climb with!
A guess the baby competition was run by Jean Smith and a Cave and Crag photo competition was run by Claire Dignon. Val made up a tent of tranquillity and there were face painting for the kids. Gladys was the marquee master and Paul was the DJ for the night. I’d like to thank all of you who helped with the cooking and getting the tables together.
Pantifest Party Essentials

Try to be as self sefficient as possible as the Hut's resources will be stretched to the max.

Update- FRIDAY 30th April - Please bring water with you as the tanks are low.

What to bring:
Camping equipment - tent and stove (as you probably won't get a bed in the house).
Remember the kitchen will be very busy so a brew stove may save you some time.
Food for the table on Saturday night to go with the curry we are making would be very welcome. Whatever you want to bring. Salad / french bread / pasta / puddings / sweets etc
Food for the rest of your stay as the rest of the weekend is self catering.
Drinking water.
Chairs to sit down to eat.
Hippy costume for that real festival atmosphere (if you want to dress up - but watch out for the 'pigs' man)
Please bring any flags or decorations - anything gratefully received.
Jam jars for putting candles in if you have some spare.

Thanks and see you soon.

Pleasesee the sad article below, if you can help, please contact Jenny potts.
Thanks
SERIOUS DAMAGE IN GIANTS HOLE

Daryl Godfrey reported on 6th. April that there had been serious and deliberate vandalism in Giants Hole - the affected area is the terminal chamber of Wet Inlets. This is an area which is not particularly easy to access since it involves a climb and squeezes and so is probably beyond the scope of ‘punters’ with a head torch.
The vandals have apparently used a rock to break off metre-long sections of stal, which have smashed on hitting the floor. Other formations from the same chamber have been snapped off and removed, leaving a scene of destruction in what was once a hidden gem. Daryl comments that the chamber floor “… is a scene of calcite genocide …”. Giants Hole is an SSSI, and so protected by law, and is also one of the caves being monitored by cavers on behalf of Natural England. Some of the stal. in Giants has been dated and is being specifically monitored and NE are anxious to establish whether the damage affects any of these crucial areas.
We are appealing to all cavers to help us catch the culprits so we need to know, if possible, on what date the damage was done. Dave Webb, DCA Conservation Officer, will be collating information so please contact Dave direct (or Daryl) if you have any information.
If you have visited that area of Giants recently and have seen the affected area undamaged, please could you contact Dave and/or Daryl to give them the date. Equally, if you have seen the area after it was damaged, please also give us the date. That will help us narrow it down. We also need photographs taken of the intact chamber to establish exactly what has been broken or removed.
Contact: Dave Webb: Em. mailto:conservation-off@thedca.org.uk, Tel. 0115-840-1109
or Daryl Godfrey: Em. mailto:daryl@acclimbatize.co.uk, Tel. 01629-820268, Mob. 07881-626317
Thanks for your help.

The Gower Meet, May 28th – 31st Bank Holiday

The Gower Peninsula in South Wales has lovely beaches, superb cliff-walks, rough inland moorland, pubs, lots for all the family….

…. And masses of excellent climbing: it certainly has the greatest number of lower-grade routes of any of the coastal areas. There’s loads from Mod and Diff upwards, so it’s the ideal place to improve your leading skills, or to experience the delights of seacliff climbing for the first time…

…. Plus The Force will be with us …. the moon will be full, which means low low tides in the middle of the day, and the best conditions to climb from the beach.

But the area is very popular with other holidaymakers: the best campsite which can fit us all in is Oxwich Camping Park, 01792 390777, Mob 07999 567143. The site is very friendly, and has normal facilities plus a laundry and also an outdoor pool for our warm-blooded members! It is a short walk from a huge beach. £8 pppn for an ordinary tent. Campervans are OK, caravans not.

The site recommends that we book in the next 3 - 4 weeks, so think about it, and get your name to me by April 21st. Unfortunately, it might be that they fill up completely before the end of May: one other local site is already almost fully-booked.

Andy and Penny Hemsted will be there from Friday 28th – Monday 31st. Any queries to us, 0121 382 6168.

As I needed a new climbing rope for the El Chorro trip,I first checked out the shops, then began looking on line. At northwestface.com , it seemed I could save around £30 on the purchase, so I ordered. 36 hours later my rope arrived[free postage] on a DHL van. My initial excitement quickly evaporated when I unpacked it though, as at some point it had come into contact with a heat source, and we all know what that does to climbing ropes! I immediately rang the supplier[they are a climbing wall in Warrington who also run a shop], and they were fantastic.I fully expected to have problems, but they were happy to take my word and when I explained how imminent my trip was, they immediately despatched a replacement, which arrived before 10am on Monday, and the courier collected the damaged rope. Great service, great people, good prices- check it out!
