We had both been in before, but this time made the effort to search in detail so many of the climbs and the cross rifts. We were both immensely impressed with how many passages there were and in searching out old PDMHS articles about the mine in question. We'll take a rope in next time and allow Adi (or Clive if he is feeling adventurous!) to have a good search.

We met up with Ric in the carpark of The Temple Hotel and enjoyed a leisurely stroll to the entrance to Devonshire Cavern. Adi was biting at the bit and remembered the route perfectly from a trip into The Dev with Chris and family. There was no stopping him, he quickly threw himself over the entrance climb and then him and Ric were exploring one little squirmy hole after another. I think I am creating a climbing/caving monster; take your eyes off him for one second and he's off up some daunting slippery climb or happily approaching rather large drops.. After a quick race around some of the tighter lower section, it was good to leave in daylight and enjoy an excellent pint of Blue Monkey at The Temple.

This place blows my mine again and again. Pockets of stunning crystals left, right and centre. Protected from fluospar mining and mineral hunters by a tough shaft or blooming hard caving. It is such fun caving: high in the stopes, wet and low streamways and a tight, muddy little rift that went on and on. Even the return back up the shaft seemed like a bit of fun!
Several teachers and a true scholar do a heavy metal trip

Feeling slightly lazy on the typing front, so I'm going to let Ric regale you with a few comments on our latest adventure, one of Derbyshires classics, an exchange trip between Oxlow and Maskill:

From the west; ( in readiness with forty plus lumps of heavy metal work and enough rope to have reached the Titanic!)
Mr Connors, the Gupster (geography, a.k.a. colouring in, and P.E.), Al, a true scholar (origami)
From the east; Craig (primary, a.k.a. more interesting colouring in and sex-ed) Teacher Z, and an Owd Git.

Venue; not Yorkshire, due to an inclement bout of dampness there4 A Maskhill - Oxlow exchange.
Friday eve, I measured, labelled and packed a frugal, tho' wholly safe and sufficient selection of ropes. In the correct bags ready to feed out, also in direct correlation to pitches, sufficient 'light-weight' aluminium crabs.
Lastly all my spare crabs and stainless maillons, to suppliment the western party (no not cowboys!!)
Saturday morning sat at the appropriate place, (having made due payment at the cat sanctuary.)
I answered the 'we're still at the cafe' call. Bob enjoyed his windswept toddle up and down the verge so all still well.
Eyup, they soon came hurtling to the very spot.
The resultant care with which the ropes, heavy metal and bags were shuffled to and fro around a field was like a market trickster doing the three cups and a pea con trick.
Not long in geological timescale, they romped gaily up t' hill.
We similarly tho in a more hetro' style, forged our mighty way to the entrance ( shan't mention Mr. Z going to help with the finding of the chuffin great lid.)
I rigged with the fervour of a fool deprived for far far too long of his little 'fix' of caving.
The entrance was lovely, while slightly damp 2nd' pitch slightly less so. We had oodles of time in-hand,so Craig and the intrepid Mr.Z had a nosey up the in-situ' rope to the 'rock bridge' above East Chamber (and towards Jim's crawl?)
I was 'caught short' (how ironic) and had to add to the water table. I took the precaution of clipping in tho to save t'owd man scaring me over the edge mid-flow. Lucky too! A pebble or two took the quick route from above the rock bridge and faily hurtled past me. Had I not evacuated my bowels earlier I may have had a good tale to tell here!
Third pitch + def' damp
Then a wee drop and my first look in East chamber, just a little ratch about. How far does the dig go?
A superb drenching from above to reach 'the slope', the black line still in place so we ambled to the fourth, we had fetched a rope for the Pilgrims Way pull through, but as we'd already faffed, thought to go and be ready to exchange with the boys.
The usual admiration of the West Chamber,
Then we waited....
OOOh Light.
Still there .
Still there,
Craig mentioned we had taken best part of 45 min's from 'first spot' to reaching West Chamber last time, so we waited
After a while we saw the origami kid on the Tyrollean traverse. and rig the descent repeatedly, just to tease us. His arrival was well met with a jolly word or two (no piss-take at all)
They all three looked well and had enjoyed the heavy metal experience. Just an hours stroll ahead of them fetching our lite* tm. gear to H.Q.
We planned with a military precision the method of crossing up t' Tyrol' without breaking two more ribs as once before (thankyou Clive!)
A speciall inclusion of a wee prussic loop to feed the last rope through would avoid wear on the 'eco'
On rope, gently feed out to the perpendicular and climb vertically. Piss!!
Very damp this side, rope very heavy, metal? nuff said.
Up etc, hauling an aged arse, a wet bag of rope and a damaged back, I found strength in my faith - the certainty that the P. V. would still be serving for hours on return.
More rope, unusuall knots and frugality to be admired anywhere other than a re-belay.
Sweet luck (sorry typo!) i was well knackered at one or other pitch-head, short legs /tall rigger, Ya know wot i mean? Back not as good as earlier, must take care (silly bugger, I should always take care on rope, eh?)
Craig caught up with me at Trebuchet, where I changed batteries. We checked the mighty Mr.Z and retired to the wall at the top of the Jumbles.
I called to our de-rigger ,then made back to assist, even his legs had to stretch at one point, then return over t' edge to haul a very naughty bag past a b*sard of a jutty-out bit.
Well played Sir!
I sent Craig on with all he could haul, then fetched a wet bag of muddy (also heavy) rope ,steel crabs and other assorted heavy metal.
Up!! was the plan, the back and subsequently un-fit legs said piss-off ya twonk,
I pleaded (without moving my lips or uttering a syllable aloud) with them to co-operate, promising not to embarrass them on a caving forum if they would simply obey me and do their damned job!
That did the trick, and luckily the short ugly little beggars can't read,
Only t' entrance to go , easy, squallid and muddy, Craig checked my progress dilligently and then ran to the warmth of his far too posh a conveyance for a struggling teacher.
I topped and hid in a hollow from the biting ravages of the spring weather.
"Oy, you there?" yells Mr. Z, coming into view.
I leapt into action, threw the bag to the side and confessed I couldn't lean forward to haul the last rope out with the last of our party. He shrugged and did the bizz, until another unusual (weighted) knot refused to play-ball. he pulled, pushed, wiggled and bemoaned the gods and the four winds while not (pun) undoing yea well safe attachment. I gave it a little encouragement and the day was won , Hurrah!
Thank you all for a great wet heavy muddy prelude to my isolated pint of Absolluton at the Red Lion, Litton.
This whetted my appetite for the P. V. in 'Matlock Bath.
Many thanks boys, adieu till the next time, ta boys.
O. G.

More adventures underneath the Peak!

Yet another trip into this most stunning of mines beckoned, our northern brethren requesting the jaunt. Ric, Craig, Andy, Moley and myself making up the team. Cars were sorted out, and by 8 p.m. we were underground. The crystal still left in place in this mine is breathtaking - its inaccessability makes it a treasure. On each of my many trips in, I tend to fall upon yet another pocket of superb dog tooth crystals, and this trip was no exception. Andy, on his first trip, was totally enthralled, even by the 1/2 mile of coffin level! Out in time to pick up the rope and gear and make it to the PV for a couple of drinks (helped having Ric's lad behind the bar!)

Explorations of Ball Eye

Balls Eye Mine, Via Gellia, March 2012

With Ric still in a process of convalescing but desperate to cave, we decided to get back to our project of discovering every nook and cranny on offer in the Via Gellia. Ric had previously ventured into the initial passages, but for me it would all be virgin. We dumped our cars at the Play Mill car park and set off up the faint, winding track. We soon arrived at a very well secured adit entrance, but nearby a scramble over the top of a giant block led into the upper workings. Ric pointed out the ‘ladder of doom’, disappearing up into the stopes. Just to get onto the decayed remnants of the ladder required gymnastic moves that included teetering on a piece of loose pipe and relying on a bit of old, frayed tat tied to a very rusty old bar. Ric might well have got his agile lads up there once but there was no way I fancied leaving my two minus a dad!
We soon found the elusive route which twisted its way down into the lower workings. We were both very surprised to find how extensive it was (Clive, both you and your camera’s services are in demand!) It was typically Masson hill type caving, with plenty of pipe workings and heaps of mineralization to keep Ric busy. The passages also had lots of hints of more recent usage, including a lot of abandoned pipage and a dirty great big white water tank, blocking a lower passage – we marvelled about how on earth it had got there and what the nearby quarry would have been up to? I followed a low sough until it met a dammed up wall with piped water gushing out and then we crept through another low passage to find ourselves in a surprisingly large and long chamber with a multitude of smaller routes leading off. After a very interesting explore, we retreated to the PV for a pint of the ‘Plum’ and to plot our next trip into this place.

This wasn’t too far away! Having enticed Clive with stories of giant underground caverns, the three of us returned the following Friday, complete with camera gear. Despite my reservations, the two of them were soon teetering on the said pipe and dragging themselves up the bit of tat – I have to admit, it wasn’t quite the ladder of doom I had imagined. We soon found ourselves in the upper workings; a seldom trodden and crumbly place. The workings here dated well back. Ric had in mind reaching the mythical Fountrabbey Level, and we gave it a good try, including tight crawls both under and up ancient piles of deads, and Ric starting his own little dig! There are more leads to follow, but we’ll be needing a couple of scaffold bars and some rope to help us!

<div id="div_5da06a49dd61eed5e185af05a274cada"
